Proof of Concept: Android OS Using E Ink

Saturday Feb 14 2009 | 2 responsesTechnology Update

We’ve already seen seen Mobile Firefox demonstrated with the E Ink Developer kit. Now a group called MOTO has shown with a proof of concept video that the Google Android OS can operate using the E Ink Development Kit. With display interfacing taken care of, developers can now focus on creating low power, custom Android interfaces for e-readers. Imagine if all e-readers used a common platform that is open source and allows for third-party apps. It would transform the industry!

    Hi,

Love your demo, I’ve been looking around for a hardware solution for a product concept that would involve dual monochrome screens running off a basic SBC. The device is essentially an electronic file or exercise book, preferably with 12″ (touch)screens, no mouse or keyboard, and portable, low power consumption.

Up until now I have been looking at twin LVDS TFT screens, but I’ve no idea what video interface e-paper uses or even if it is commercially available in a 4×3 (or similar) 12″ format. Equally, are you licensing or selling your driver?

    Regards,

    Piers

..so has this project got any further? I’d love to be able to have e-ink screens on my mobile phone, tablet, laptop etc.. apart from the horrible “blink” every time the screen updates. Is it not possible to only update the bits of the screen that have changed? (i.e. if moving the cursor one position left, then on a grid, only two squares of that grid would need to “blink” in order to update. Colour would also be nice!
