Well, well, what do we have here? Canadian researchers have made great progress into displays that use color-changing materials called photonic crystals. These crystals change colors when a different voltage is applied to them...

yup! it would bring brighter, more flexible color displays to e-book readers and other devices!

that means that e-book readers won't be limited to using e-ink :) That's great news!

for what it's worth, e-ink already has a color display

yeah, but e-ink's color displays might not be as good, nor as vibrant or as bright as these crystals can produce.

I do hope they get over the stumbling blocks. I heard that the rate of color change is quite slow, and that the colors are not really that many

This is something I'd like to see... finally technology that puts e-paper at par with LCDs in terms of color management and display.

I agree... E-ink's resolution and colors suck... BIG TIME

that's what the update is all about really. The researchers have already made the color change faster and the spectrum goes from UV to infrared.

you're right! a faster rate of color change and a wider spectrum of colors.
