The construction professions are crying out for a new design tool to augment or, rather, replace the now nearly 30 year old fixed flat screen monitor (in this respect the flatscreen monitor is primarily a space saver) and keyboard. For us the wireless interactive flexible touch screen cannot come quickly enough, especially as we move into a more inclusive and collaborative design environment. Software such as AutoDesk's Revit BIM software is beginning to allow us to develop 3D, 4D and 5D (visitable visual information, realtime based scheduling and cost and specification information) virtual construction models with an increasing ease. AtLast's (now Google's) SketchUp is allowing us to develop our "wiggly line" concepts directly into a 3D soft translatable format. Wireless technology allows us separation from other than the power base - and with MIT's developments that barrier is being broken down (as long as there is a close power source).
BUT they both use/rely on, at present, an inflexible media set for translation - the mouse, keyboard and monitor. The Cintiq tablet is available but does not provide the same flexibility as a piece of paper and a pencil.
The opportunity to go back to the finger (and/or pencil) and a responsive surfaced flexible interactive film that can be shared around a table or on a wall or stand with other disciplines would be good for the next way to go. The market, I believe, for AutoCAD is something like 12 million users - so it is not as if there is no market...often the argument against specific developments.
Developments in BIM and IPD (integrated project design) - software and management system - are currently not being matched by available cost effective hardware to provide the necessary flexibility for these to be used most effectively.
