Just to let people know www.play.com has reduced the price of the sony reader prs-505 to £150. I would grab this while you can. There have been some bad reviews of this product, but if you have any questions about it then ask away here. I know exactly how they work (not the software though) and I have a massive ebook collection myself so I know all about converting between formats etc. So, just to put off the 2 questions most often asked here are the answers:

Q: It is not bright enough, why is there no bacKlight??!!
A: This is a reflective display - a backlight would mean that the inside of the reader would be very bright but it would make little no difference to the screen you're looking at. Some light would get through but consider that it would pass through a layer of black particles which would absorb a lot of the light, then a layer of white particles which would reflect most of what was left back at the backlight......or vise versa.

Q: I cannot put format x ebook onto the reader.
A: Google "abc amber" to find some very good free software (there are some that you need to pay for but don't - the free ones are usually enough) which can convert a lot of formats. I also recommend "Calibre", another open source free software for use with sony readers. PDF's are a little harder to convert between but if you need to pm me and I can help - you can do this if you have adobe acrobat pro easily, and some others do it to, but I have pro so I use that one!

I have been doing some research in preparation of purchasing a reader (that is when I can find the money). From everything I've found I like the Sony PRS-505 the best. It is mid to low range of prices among readers. It is not shackled to Amazon as with the kindle. It has the ability to read pdf files which opens up any printable format.

The biggest complaints others have I really don’t see as negative.
-No touch screen - not really a concern, I find navigating with buttons just as easy
-No backlight - I'm looking for something to replace books, books aren’t backlit
-Slow refresh rate - I think you will have this problem with most readers on the market
-No annotation ability - this might be nice but I don’t write in my books now
-No wifi capability - there is enough memory to load more than enough books

Once I can scrounge some money together I’ll get one. With more readers coming on the market I’m sure the price will start to come down more.

One place that I have been watching is eBay. There seems to be some good deals, you just need to be patient and read the description carefully.
