Many articles said that the manufacturing cost of e-paper is coming down and becoming a threat to LCD etc...

I'm not sure what the cost is for e-paper screens, but it will be cheaper to manufacture than current LCD screens - maybe not yet, since LCD has had 20+ years more of manufacturiing equipment investments. However, keep in mind that one e-paper technology is based off of LCD: ChLCD (cholesteric liquid crystal)

E-ink films are too expensive at the moment - the manufacturing process suffers from poor yields, driving the cost up - it's not going to challenge traditional LCDs in the near future and really electrophoretic displays will never realise the switching time required for high frame rate applications.

Switching speed at the moment for electrophoretics are the order of 100's of ms - 5-10 frames per second. Although for conventional video speed displays it is a little more complex than just frame rate, generally these are an order of magnitude too low. you will see E-ink and a few others claiming faster switching speeds, but in real cases you won't see them that high. There are fundamental limits on electrophoretic switching speeds given pixel sizes and elementary charges required to get high enough electrophoretic mobility.

I never caught those videos. I had seen some of the vids of the touch screen sony before, but not the E-Ink screen you can draw on - that is quite funky.
I think you're right that hybrid screens will probably be the drivers of the technology over the next few years - the readers are just too expensive imo at the moment, and blending with other technologies will help ofset some of those costs.
