Quite a cool idea to have the buttons as mini e-ink films so buttons can change what they display to match what you're using the phone for!

I agree, very smart. Too bad the phone itself does not look attractive. :)
Yeah, it does look a bit rubbish and I don't think they'll ever really see big sales of this one - maybe next gen but for now it seems an interesting concept and highlights that many of these future applications for electronic paper like devices are really amalgamations of current and new technology as opposed to standalone devices like e-readers. I think it'll be interesting to see some really novel uses around technology blends.
I agree. It never occured to me that the display could be used for a keypad! I'd like to see e-paper implemented on car dashboards. :)
Could be a bit more difficult for dashboards as the marking often need to be lit, but for things like markings on the gear stick, indicators etc that would be a useful place for reflective displays. The bits which need to be visible could be replaces by backlit transmissive epaper.
Good idea. Keep in mind, flexible and transparent transisters will come out.

That will create opportunities for embedding displays onto dashboard windows. Not sure if you would still call that e-paper (bi-stable).
I found this video entertaining. This Samsung ad shows the changeable keypad from E Ink in the Alias 2 mobile phone
