NY Times to go electronic?

If Michael Hirschorn is to be believed, the New York Times would be out of business by May this year. So what's the paper gonna do? Well, Nicholas Carlson at the Silicon Alley Insider thinks that the paper could be saved if it gave Kindle to all its subscribers and stop printing.

Carlson says that the savings would be enough to turn the paper around, since electronic distribution will cut costs by 50%

I've read about Carlson's estimates. With $644 million in annual expenses to print and distribute the paper, Carlson says that distributing a free Kindle to its subscribers would only cost the company around $300 million. Hence the savings of more than 50%

I think that only accounts for subscribers, what about non-subscribers who pick up their NYT on the streets or in convenience stores where would that take them?

I think they could also be offered the NYT on a pay basis, they could receive the NYT when they pay for it on their own readers.

all these could translate to a great promotional scheme for the NYT, subscribe now and get a free Kindle!

The NYT would do us a great favor by going electronic... they would save trees, gas and all that.

I agree that going the e-paper way is the logical solution for NYT, it really does cost less for the company... but I am wondering how it would affect the ads?

I think one of the best selling points of e-paper is that it can replicate the lay out of a physical newspaper, so the ads stay where they are and the revenues shouldn't be affected that much.

It may be a revolutionary idea now, but I think it's going to be the norm in the future.

Firstly, am shocked that the NYT is having problems financially, I've always thought that they were one of those who are immune to the recession. Secondly, am glad they are looking into the e-paper technology for their content. The NYT has been great at delivering their content on different platforms, proof is their success both in print and online.

Yeah I think the calculations are flawed too, but interesting to find that e-paper could save the NYT more than half a million dollars!

Well, I know that three newspapers in Europe have started trials using e-Paper... and I think they have met little success on this path. One of them, Le Monde, even created their own e-paper device...

Yes, not printing on paper does save a newspaper company a lot of money...

I love newspapers, really. But I agree with you guys in saying that the way of the future is e-newspapers... it's just that we all need to get used to the idea of the new technology.

I agree on both of your observations :) I am thinking that the NYT would be become a great contributor to e-paper's advancements
