I agree!!! i also think it would be good for cash machines, i mean think about how much energy those things waste!!! they are on 24/7!!! and they dont need videos and stuff on the screen!!
Also cant wait until they start using e-paper as price tags!!

The problem with cash machines is that most e-paper is reflective. No light, no screen. At night for cash machines you would always need some form of illumination

I hear a lot of people stating that they'll stick to paper because they love the way it feels. I however do predict a strong decline of paper in favour of epaper, for following reasons:

- Price. As paper sales drop, printing will become more expensive, while increased consumption and lower production cost will make epaper cheaper. In the end, it'll simply be cheaper to buy epaper.

- User friendlyness. Epaper is only a few years old. Remember the advances electronics like pc's and mobile phones are making in terms of consumer ease. Battery life, touch screens, speed, memory... If in 5 (?) years time a fast, colour capable piece of epaper costs 100 euro, it'll be the new iPod.

- Ease. For school and work, you'll be able to carry huge amounts of paper on an easy to access, user friendly item. You'll be able to download your books from home or anywere you get wireless, rather than running to the library each time, hoping someone else didn't lend the same copy.

- Freedom of information. You'll always have to pay for printed texts, unless you want to risk stealing from the store. On the internet, information is really hard to protect if used by a large public (think about how movies and music get digitalized the moment they get released, something you also see with every latest Harry Potter edition), especially since written text is extremely small in digital size and easy to copy.
So rather than going to the book store and paying a healthy price, a lot of people will simply download an illegal copy, which will lower printed book sales, but boost epaper sales.

- Seller interest. It'll be interesting for publishing houses to just sell books in a digital form, as they can cut prices from printing. You'll even have publishing houses who'll exist purely in digital form, because of the ease. This'll be a disaster for printers around the world, but than so was the dvd to vcr companies. And as the offer is changed, so is the public's demand (the way it happend with digital tv in my country: it was worse, but there was no alternative).

- Generation differences. The next generations will grow up with epaper, the way the current one grew up with pc's. Older generations will refuse to use it at first, until they see the benefits (my grandmother still doesn't use pc or mobile, my mother couldn't live without them).

In conclusion, I'd expect over 90% of all printed releases to be replaced by ebooks by 2018. But this will also have to do with the next stage in pc integration, making the computer a more integral part of consumer's lives (written text being the last digital media barrier).

Photo frames are perfect for e-paper devices. Digital photo frames that are currently availale draws too much power and is very wasteful.

So using the e-paper technology would be a boon for digital photo frames, don't you think?

I've recently bought an e-paper photo frame... i will concede that it's darker than LCD photoframes, but it's great nonetheless!

I think you guys might be confusing things. I think e-books would be great for professionals who read on their way to work, or while taking a break, but for those who read leisurely, they'd appreciate physical books more.

I agree that there are two different markets for paper and e-paper. I think we all should stop thinking that one will trump the other, that e-paper would replace paper, or that paper will stay and e-paper would just be a fad... it's nothing like that. Paper and e-paper compliment each other.

They said that people were buying Kindle books not in lieu of physical books, but in addition to it. Which means that they've just tapped another market with Kindle.

I agree with Thompson. It can only go from print to digital, there's not stopping it. The Web would become a nice complement, but until we see more wireless Web and less eyestrain from reading off monitors, I don't think it will pose a threat to e-paper devices.

great insight. I guess, all of these technologies would only work hand in hand to bring content to more people.

If that's the case then it won't be a power hog at all... do you think they have it available in stores already?

I don't think so. As a book lover, I still love leafing through books, and going to the john with it... it's not something you can do with your e-book reader.

I agree with Thompson. It can only go from print to digital, there's not stopping it. The Web would become a nice complement, but until we see more wireless Web and less eyestrain from reading off monitors, I don't think it will pose a threat to e-paper devices.

I think so. It's so much convenient and space saving. Imagine having a library of books in the palm of your hand.

I see the future of syndication opening up to even more outlets for their features than they had even 10 years ago. But right now we’re in a transition period moving things from print to digital. I think newspaper comics can thrive in digital once E-Ink and E-Paper become commonplace (cheap). Imagine if all you had to do was pick up a thin piece of E-Paper and your daily newspaper automatically arrived for you to read it, and all you had to do was click a button and it turned to the next page. That’s exciting, and hopefully it will bring an end to size constraints for comics. Personally, I’d love to draw 7 inches high and 2 feet wide dailies like Milton Caniff and the rest of the cartoonists did. But I also think the web is exciting too, and once advertising payments start to rise, I think cartoonists will become less worried. The big problem is that syndicates aren’t the only game in town anymore for comic strip cartoonists and young cartoonists have to understand that it’s even more competitive now getting an audience than it was even five years ago.

I think I've heard about a recent release like this one... a full-color digital photo frame that uses e-paper technology, it only draws power when connecting to a USB memory stick to change the display, then powers off again.

am not sure where i read it though.
